A sharply observed record of day-to-day life in occupied Paris from a writer who was a well-known political and cultural critic at the time, and who refused to pen a word for a publishing industry under Nazi control. He used his diary to express his moral, intellectual and emotional resistance, and his account expresses his shame at the Vichy government's collaboration. This is the first time an annotated, corrected edition has been published, and it has been edited and translated by David Ball.
